We still say Merry Christmas
although we’re no longer Christian
having done the time, bought the

pulp fiction, gotten the symbolic
sip of wine, and moistening of 
forehead, all the symbolic

avoidance of atrocity
at the heart of modernity
 Kind 
We’re trying to remember
everything takes place in 

SILENCE

We are romantics
We do believe in myth

Not prepackaged
on a payment plan
reliant on bloodshed
to maintain profitability

Romance 
that changes the course
of your life

Myth
that doesn’t excuse death
yet holds us up when it
inevitably, inexorably 
happens
