Came back from California today

Finished a poem I started before I left:

Hide and Seek

we’ve always been good 
hiding ourselves in other 
people, peering around 
the corner

                  making sure
they’re still counting, eyes
closed, not peeking, “God
dammit,

              you’re cheating 
Cheat! Cheater! No, no
noooooo!”

                 We begged, we
fled, giggling laughing, but
but,  butterflies, right he

make - up sex is the best

We stopped taking photos
because, they were the artist

Other crimes, equally 
egregious

                  “It doesn’t look 
that way to you?

Does it?”

We should have run away
right then

                “Ready or not
here I come!” you said.

I went to see my brother and sister in law and nieces

I saw other friends — fellow poets all

I didn’t see everyone — miss timings

It’ll be different next time

I have a complicated relationship with California

It was very wet
