Certain events reveal to us an occluded truth — After this — the world will never be the same again — A whole new world begins — the birth of my daughter was one such event I once asked my teacher — how do you talk about the past? He replied “Understanding the absolute — if asked I’d reply I have no idea what I was thinking then” — paraphrased Even though we aren’t there — I can smell the rails/concrete — feel the slight chill — the enveloping warmth — the paranoid quiet One of the few times I was in Boston — I had gone to a model UN gathering in the middle of the winter and remember taking off all my layers to prove a point — I could control my response to the icy wind blowing from the Atlantic — having grown up in Maine she’ll have an easier time than I did I remember the first few weeks of college — the satisfaction of finding a place to work — new sights — new sounds — the tang of loneliness not quite gone A radically different set of cultural concerns and yet — somehow — one can’t help but feel there is a cultural continuity — although the boot may be bigger it still hurts the same What a wonder to be surrounded by a like-minded cohort — doing their individual thing — collectively — I hope — in the entirety — this reads “Geese are geese” With luck she’ll bless us with many — many other insights — into her particular — peculiar and radical new world — at once familiar and strange A shout out, y’all to Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow by Gabriella Zevin which I started listening to as an audiobook and kind of wished I was reading it so I could share the audiobook later — It takes place (thus far) in Boston and LA — so has a great resonance with this post — And is the ultimate gamer geek literary novel — have already had tears well up twice;-) If the artist above wants a copy of either audio or text just dm me!
Much love,
